Cochran Moves to Establish
Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) has introduced legislation to establish the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. The legislation designates a 30 county area in Mississippi as the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area. The project has been in the developmental stages since 2004.

“The hills of Mississippi are rich in unique historical, natural, and cultural characteristics,” said Senator Cochran. “This legislation will highlight the wonderful traits of the region and ensure that the story of the Mississippi Hills is preserved and promulgated.” ...

Three-Year Strategic Plan Presented,
New Website Launched

Officials of the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance met with partners and stakeholders Thursday at the BancorpSouth Conference Center in Tupelo to present details of a recently completed three-year strategic plan (click to download in .pdf format, 7.02 MB). In conjunction, a new promotional website, www.mississippihills.org, was formally launched. Both projects were funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission, Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division, University of Mississippi, and CREATE Foundation of Tupelo.

Heritage Week 2005

The Appalachian Regional Commission and the CREATE Foundation sponsored Mississippi Hills Heritage Week 2005 (click for a full report in .pdf format). "Building the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area: Strategies for Success" was the theme of six separate presentations, which covered highlights of the heritage area Concept Plan as well as key findings from "Turning the Past into Profit: the Economic Potential of the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area", a study funded by ARC and CREATE--and available below in .pdf format.

Strategic Visioning Guidebook Published

The Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance has published a planning resource entitled, "The Strategic Visioning Guidebook: Building the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area--One Community at a Time" (click to download .pdf).

This guidebook is being provided free of charge to area communities. It has been made possible through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP), and the Peoples Bank of Ripley, as well as technical assistance from the National Your Town Center.

Other Past Activities & Accomplishments
On June 10 and 11, 2004, the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance conducted the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Conference. The conference was part of Mississippi Hills Heritage Week, which also included a Concept Plan workshop, six local stakeholder meetings and a heritage assessment tour.

Also in 2004, the Alliance presented a preliminary version of the heritage area Concept Plan at the Northeast Mississippi Heritage Tourism Summit. This event was held on August 25 at the Advanced Education Center on the Tupelo Ole Miss Campus, and was co-sponsored by the University of Mississippi and the CREATE Foundation.

And on September 23 and 24, 2004, the Alliance hosted a "Your Town: The Citizens' Institute on Rural Design" workshop, which was funded by the NEA and NTHP. The event was held at historic Blue Mountain College, and was made also possible by a generous matching contribution from the Peoples Bank of Ripley.
